It has been commissioned as the Conventual Church of Saint John (Knisja Konventwali ta’ San Ġwann) by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière în 1572 and built by the Order of St. John between 1572 and 1577, under the guidance of the famous Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar.
